Biocompatibility Test for Dental Materials
The dental material biocompatibility test is the least expensive test available that will help assess which dental materials are more biocompatible for you. The test will provide your dentist with a list of all the commonly used dental materials and will evaluate whether your body showed reactivity to a variety of chemical groups and also if you are suited or not well suited to over 2,000 individual dental materials. Thus the test results can be used to determine the most compatible dental material every time you have dental work performed.
If you decide to take the biocompatibility test, the most important consideration is time. Your dentist must have the test results two weeks before beginning your dental treatment, so be sure to allow the time it takes to have the test done, analyzed by the laboratory, and the results sent to the dentist.
This involves:
• Having your dentist or health professional order the test;
• Having a kit sent to you;
• Scheduling an appointment to have blood drawn and prepared for the laboratory;
• Shipping time to the testing laboratory;
• Time for the lab test procedure; and
• Time for the testing lab to send the results to the dentist.
If your dentist doesn’t stock the dental materials the testing lab determines are best suited for you, it will take time for him to order and receive them.
Biocompatibility Testing for Dental Materials: Your Choice
If you choose not to have a biocompatibility test, your dentist can’t guarantee that the materials he uses are compatible with your body. In this case, we suggest asking your dentist to select the materials he has found to be most compatible for the greatest number of patients. Mercury free and biological dentists are much more likely to be aware of the importance of compatibility testing and better able to advise you on appropriate materials.

It provides a very good description of what this test is all about, both for the health professional and the layperson. If he dismisses the value of biocompatibility testing I suggest asking him to explain his reasoning and to provide you with a creditable alternative testing method. Some dentists and health professionals suggest muscle testing, also called applied kinesiology. While muscle testing has some value it is a much more subjective test. Doing muscle testing properly also requires access to a large number of the dental materials that are used as filling materials.
While the major oral threats to your health will come from gum disease and mercury amalgam fillings, everything must be considered if you want to effectively treat any existing disease and restore normal health and function.
